Abstract Financial Technology (FinTech) has transformed the global financial services industry by improving access to banking, digital payments, lending, insurance, investment, and financial management through innovative digital technologies. In emerging economies, where millions of individuals and small businesses remain underserved by traditional financial institutions, FinTech has become a powerful driver of financial inclusion and sustainable economic development. Technologies such as mobile banking, digital wallets, blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), big data analytics, cloud computing, biometric authentication, and open banking have significantly expanded access to affordable, secure, and efficient financial services. These innovations reduce transaction costs, increase financial accessibility, enhance transparency, and support inclusive economic growth.
This study investigates the impact of Financial Technology (FinTech) on financial inclusion and economic development in emerging economies using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data collected from peer-reviewed journals, international financial reports, policy documents, and institutional case studies. The study examines digital payments, mobile financial services, peer-to-peer lending, digital banking, blockchain-enabled finance, regulatory technology (RegTech), financial literacy, and digital financial ecosystems. Furthermore, it evaluates the contribution of FinTech to poverty reduction, entrepreneurship, microfinance, employment generation, economic resilience, and sustainable development while identifying implementation challenges and future research opportunities.
The findings indicate that FinTech significantly improves financial accessibility, promotes digital payment adoption, supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), enhances financial literacy, increases savings and investment opportunities, and contributes to inclusive economic growth. The integration of Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and open banking further strengthens financial innovation, fraud detection, credit assessment, customer experience, and regulatory compliance. However, challenges including cybersecurity risks, digital inequality, regulatory uncertainty, data privacy, financial literacy gaps, infrastructure limitations, and consumer protection continue to affect widespread adoption.
The study concludes that Financial Technology represents a transformative force for achieving financial inclusion and sustainable economic development in emerging economies. Continued collaboration among governments, financial institutions, technology providers, regulators, and international organisations is essential to maximise the socioeconomic benefits of digital finance.
