Cybersecurity Challenges in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Industry 5.0: A Multidisciplinary Review

Abstract The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industry 5.0, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, edge computing, digital twins, blockchain, and cyber-physical systems (CPS) has fundamentally transformed industrial operations, healthcare, manufacturing, finance, transportation, and critical infrastructure. While these technologies enhance automation, human-machine collaboration, productivity, and intelligent decision-making, they simultaneously introduce increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity risks. AI-powered cyberattacks, ransomware, adversarial machine learning, data breaches, insider threats, supply chain attacks, and vulnerabilities in connected industrial systems have become significant challenges for governments, businesses, and society. Industry 5.0, characterised by human-centric intelligent automation, requires robust cybersecurity frameworks that ensure resilience, privacy, trust, and operational continuity across interconnected digital ecosystems.
This study investigates cybersecurity challenges in the era of Artificial Intelligence and Industry 5.0 using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data collected from peer-reviewed journals, international cybersecurity reports, industrial standards, and multidisciplinary case studies. The study examines AI-driven cybersecurity, zero-trust architecture, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), cyber-physical security, digital identity management, threat intelligence, blockchain-enabled security, privacy-preserving machine learning, and secure industrial automation. Furthermore, it evaluates the contribution of intelligent cybersecurity technologies to risk management, resilience, data protection, regulatory compliance, critical infrastructure security, and organisational sustainability while identifying implementation challenges and future research opportunities.
The findings indicate that Artificial Intelligence significantly improves threat detection, malware analysis, anomaly detection, incident response, behavioural analytics, vulnerability assessment, and predictive cyber defence. The integration of Explainable AI, Digital Twins, blockchain, federated learning, zero-trust security architectures, and quantum-resistant cryptography further strengthens cyber resilience and trust. However, challenges including adversarial AI, algorithmic manipulation, privacy concerns, interoperability limitations, cybersecurity workforce shortages, regulatory complexity, and increasing attack sophistication continue to influence implementation.
The study concludes that cybersecurity supported by Artificial Intelligence and Industry 5.0 technologies represents a critical foundation for protecting future digital societies. Effective collaboration among governments, industry, researchers, and international organisations is essential to establish secure, resilient, and ethical intelligent cyber ecosystems.
