The Role of Circular Economy Practices in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals: An Interdisciplinary Analysis

Abstract The transition from a linear "take–make–dispose" economic model to a Circular Economy (CE) has emerged as a critical strategy for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Circular Economy practices emphasise resource efficiency, waste minimisation, product life extension, recycling, remanufacturing, reuse, industrial symbiosis, and regenerative production systems. These practices reduce environmental degradation, conserve natural resources, promote sustainable consumption and production, and contribute to long-term economic resilience. The integration of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, Digital Twins, big data analytics, cloud computing, and advanced manufacturing further strengthens the implementation of circular economy principles across multiple sectors.
This study investigates the role of Circular Economy practices in achieving Sustainable Development Goals using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data collected from peer-reviewed journals, international reports, government policies, and multidisciplinary case studies. The study examines circular production systems, sustainable supply chains, green manufacturing, renewable energy integration, waste management, resource recovery, smart agriculture, healthcare sustainability, and urban circularity. Furthermore, it evaluates the contribution of Circular Economy to climate action, biodiversity conservation, sustainable industrial development, economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection while identifying implementation challenges and future research opportunities.
The findings indicate that Circular Economy practices significantly improve resource productivity, waste reduction, carbon emission mitigation, sustainable production, green innovation, employment generation, and economic competitiveness. The integration of AI, blockchain, IoT, Digital Twins, and big data analytics enhances material traceability, predictive maintenance, lifecycle assessment, circular supply chain management, and intelligent resource optimisation. However, challenges including regulatory barriers, financial constraints, technological readiness, consumer awareness, infrastructure limitations, and policy coordination continue to influence successful implementation.
The study concludes that the Circular Economy provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary framework for accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Effective collaboration among governments, industries, academia, financial institutions, and civil society is essential to establish resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable circular economies.
