Blockchain-Based Healthcare Information Systems for Secure Medical Data Exchange

| Abstract | The increasing digitalisation of healthcare systems has resulted in the generation and exchange of massive volumes of medical data, including electronic health records (EHRs), diagnostic reports, medical images, and patient-generated health information. While digital healthcare improves accessibility, efficiency, and coordination among healthcare providers, it also introduces significant challenges related to data security, privacy protection, interoperability, and unauthorised access. Traditional healthcare information systems often rely on centralised architectures that create vulnerabilities such as single points of failure, data breaches, and limited control over patient information. Blockchain technology has emerged as a promising solution for developing secure, transparent, and decentralised healthcare information systems. By utilising distributed ledger technology, cryptographic security, smart contracts, and consensus mechanisms, blockchain enables secure medical data exchange while maintaining data integrity and patient privacy. This study presents a comprehensive review of blockchain-based healthcare information systems for secure medical data exchange through a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data from scientific literature, healthcare technology reports, and blockchain implementation case studies. The research examines blockchain applications in electronic health records management, health information exchange, patient identity management, medical data sharing, clinical research, and healthcare supply chain security. The findings demonstrate that blockchain can improve healthcare data security, enhance interoperability among healthcare organisations, increase patient ownership of medical information, and establish trust among healthcare stakeholders. However, challenges including scalability limitations, high computational requirements, regulatory uncertainty, privacy concerns, interoperability issues, and integration complexity remain significant barriers to widespread adoption. Effective implementation requires hybrid blockchain architectures, strong governance frameworks, compliance with healthcare regulations, and collaboration among healthcare providers, technology developers, and policymakers. The study concludes that blockchain-based healthcare information systems represent a transformative approach for secure medical data exchange. Future healthcare ecosystems will increasingly depend on blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced digital technologies to create secure, patient-centric, and interoperable healthcare networks. |
