Innovative Waste Management Systems for Smart and Sustainable Communities

Abstract Rapid urbanisation, population growth, industrial expansion, and changing consumption patterns have significantly increased the volume and complexity of municipal solid waste worldwide. Conventional waste management systems, which primarily rely on collection, transportation, landfilling, and incineration, face numerous challenges, including inefficient resource utilisation, environmental pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing operational costs. Consequently, there is a growing need for innovative waste management systems that integrate advanced digital technologies, circular economy principles, and sustainable governance to create cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities.
This study presents a comprehensive review of innovative waste management systems for smart and sustainable communities. The research adopts a qualitative and analytical methodology based on secondary data obtained from peer-reviewed journal articles, government reports, international sustainability frameworks, and smart city initiatives. The study examines the application of Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), blockchain, robotics, and cloud computing in improving waste collection, segregation, recycling, monitoring, and decision-making processes.
The findings indicate that smart waste management systems significantly enhance collection efficiency, reduce operational costs, improve recycling rates, minimise landfill dependency, and lower environmental impacts. Technologies such as AI-enabled waste classification, sensor-equipped smart bins, route optimisation algorithms, robotic sorting systems, and blockchain-based waste tracking contribute to efficient resource recovery and transparent waste governance. These innovations support the transition towards circular economy models by promoting waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and sustainable consumption.
Despite their considerable advantages, challenges remain regarding infrastructure investment, technology integration, cybersecurity, public awareness, regulatory frameworks, and interoperability among digital systems. Future research should focus on explainable AI, autonomous waste management, digital twins, edge intelligence, and community-centred circular economy models.
The study concludes that innovative waste management systems represent a critical component of sustainable urban development. Their integration with smart technologies and environmental governance can substantially improve public health, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability while supporting global sustainable development goals.
