Interdisciplinary Approaches to Mental Health Using Digital Technologies

| Abstract | Mental health disorders have become one of the leading contributors to the global burden of disease, affecting individuals across all age groups and socio-economic backgrounds. Depression, anxiety, stress-related disorders, substance abuse, and other psychological conditions have increased significantly due to rapid urbanisation, technological dependence, social isolation, and global crises. Traditional mental healthcare systems often face challenges such as limited accessibility, shortage of mental health professionals, social stigma, delayed diagnosis, and inadequate continuity of care. The integration of digital technologies with interdisciplinary healthcare approaches has emerged as a promising strategy for improving mental health assessment, intervention, monitoring, and personalised treatment. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of interdisciplinary approaches to mental health using digital technologies. A qualitative analytical research methodology based on secondary data is adopted to examine how digital innovations—including Artificial Intelligence (AI), mobile health (mHealth), telepsychiatry, wearable devices, Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), big data analytics, and digital therapeutics—can support multidisciplinary mental healthcare. The study explores collaborations among psychiatry, psychology, nursing, public health, computer science, neuroscience, social work, and behavioural sciences to develop integrated digital mental health ecosystems. The findings indicate that digital technologies significantly enhance early detection, continuous monitoring, personalised interventions, treatment accessibility, and patient engagement. AI-powered predictive analytics facilitate early identification of mental health risks, while wearable sensors and mobile applications enable real-time monitoring of behavioural and physiological indicators. Telemedicine and digital therapeutics improve access to care for underserved populations, and virtual reality supports innovative treatments for anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and phobias. Despite these opportunities, challenges remain regarding data privacy, ethical AI implementation, digital inequality, clinical validation, interoperability, cybersecurity, and user acceptance. Future research should focus on explainable artificial intelligence, federated learning, personalised digital therapeutics, digital mental health twins, and responsible governance frameworks. The study concludes that interdisciplinary collaboration supported by digital technologies provides a transformative pathway for improving mental healthcare delivery, promoting psychological wellbeing, reducing healthcare disparities, and developing resilient, patient-centred mental health systems. |
