| Abstract | The global tourism industry has experienced significant transformation due to rapid technological advancement, changing traveller expectations, environmental concerns, and the growing importance of sustainable development. Traditional tourism management models often face challenges related to environmental degradation, overcrowding, inefficient resource utilisation, limited visitor engagement, and inadequate destination management. Sustainable tourism development supported by digital innovation and smart technologies has emerged as a strategic approach for balancing economic growth, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and social wellbeing. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cloud computing, blockchain, digital twins, and mobile applications are revolutionising tourism planning, destination management, visitor experiences, and sustainability monitoring. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of sustainable tourism development through digital innovation and smart technologies. A qualitative analytical research methodology based on secondary data is adopted to examine the role of digital transformation in promoting sustainable tourism practices, enhancing destination competitiveness, improving resource management, and supporting evidence-based policymaking. The study explores the application of AI-driven tourism analytics, smart destination management systems, intelligent transportation, digital visitor services, blockchain-enabled tourism ecosystems, and immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). The findings indicate that digital technologies significantly improve tourism sustainability by enhancing visitor management, reducing environmental impacts, supporting cultural heritage preservation, optimising energy consumption, and improving stakeholder collaboration. Smart tourism platforms enable real-time monitoring of tourist activities, predictive demand forecasting, and personalised travel experiences while supporting responsible tourism policies. Furthermore, digital governance strengthens destination resilience and promotes sustainable economic development. Despite these advantages, challenges remain concerning digital inequality, cybersecurity, data privacy, technological infrastructure, financial investment, stakeholder coordination, and ethical data management. Future research should focus on AI-enabled sustainable destination management, digital twins for tourism planning, blockchain-based tourism governance, explainable artificial intelligence, and climate-resilient smart tourism ecosystems. The study concludes that integrating digital innovation with sustainable tourism strategies provides a transformative framework for developing resilient, environmentally responsible, economically viable, and socially inclusive tourism destinations capable of addressing future global challenges. |
