Abstract The increasing complexity of global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, food insecurity, energy transitions, biodiversity loss, cyber threats, poverty, digital inequality, and sustainable urbanisation has highlighted the limitations of single-discipline research approaches. Addressing these interconnected issues requires collaboration across multiple academic disciplines, industries, governments, and civil society organisations. Cross-disciplinary research integrates diverse knowledge systems, methodologies, technologies, and stakeholder perspectives to generate innovative, evidence-based, and sustainable solutions for complex societal problems.
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of cross-disciplinary research approaches for solving complex global challenges. A qualitative analytical research methodology based on secondary data is employed to examine interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research frameworks across science, engineering, healthcare, environmental studies, social sciences, economics, public policy, and digital technologies. The study investigates how Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), systems thinking, collaborative innovation, and evidence-based policymaking strengthen cross-disciplinary research outcomes.
The findings indicate that cross-disciplinary collaboration significantly enhances knowledge integration, innovation capacity, policy effectiveness, technological advancement, and sustainable development. Integrating expertise from diverse disciplines improves problem identification, systems modelling, predictive analysis, stakeholder engagement, and implementation of scalable solutions. Digital collaboration platforms and open science initiatives further accelerate global knowledge exchange and collaborative research.
Despite these advantages, challenges remain concerning disciplinary boundaries, communication barriers, data interoperability, funding structures, research evaluation metrics, intellectual property management, and institutional coordination. Future research should focus on AI-assisted collaborative research, digital knowledge ecosystems, open science infrastructures, responsible innovation, citizen science, and integrated policy frameworks.
The study concludes that cross-disciplinary research has become an essential strategy for addressing complex global challenges by combining scientific knowledge, technological innovation, social understanding, and policy integration to achieve resilient, equitable, and sustainable global development.
