Abstract The tourism and hospitality industry has undergone a profound digital transformation driven by advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Mobile Technologies, Blockchain, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Digital Payment Systems. These innovations have fundamentally reshaped how tourists search for destinations, book travel services, experience hospitality, and interact with tourism providers. Digital innovation enables organisations to enhance operational efficiency, personalise customer experiences, improve service quality, optimise resource management, and strengthen competitiveness in an increasingly dynamic global market.
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact of digital innovation on tourism, hospitality, and customer experience. A qualitative analytical research methodology based on secondary data is employed to examine the adoption of smart tourism technologies, AI-powered customer service, digital marketing strategies, online travel platforms, intelligent hotel management systems, and immersive tourism experiences. The research evaluates how digital technologies influence customer satisfaction, operational performance, destination management, sustainability, and business resilience.
The findings indicate that digital innovation significantly improves customer engagement, booking efficiency, service personalisation, operational productivity, and destination competitiveness. AI-powered recommendation systems, predictive analytics, chatbots, smart hotel technologies, and mobile applications enhance traveller convenience and enable organisations to deliver highly customised experiences. Additionally, VR and AR provide immersive destination previews, while blockchain and digital payment technologies strengthen transaction security and transparency.
Despite these opportunities, challenges remain concerning cybersecurity, data privacy, digital skills shortages, technology adoption costs, interoperability among digital platforms, and the digital divide affecting small tourism enterprises. Future research should investigate explainable AI for tourism decision support, Digital Twin-enabled destination management, sustainable smart tourism ecosystems, metaverse-based tourism experiences, and ethical governance of tourism data.
The study concludes that digital innovation has become a strategic driver of competitiveness and sustainable growth in tourism and hospitality by improving customer experience, enabling intelligent decision-making, fostering operational excellence, and supporting resilient destination development.
