Multidisciplinary Research Trends in Smart Technologies and Sustainable Development

Abstract The convergence of smart technologies and sustainable development has become a dominant multidisciplinary research paradigm for addressing global challenges related to climate change, urbanisation, public health, industrial transformation, energy security, food sustainability, environmental conservation, and digital governance. Rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics, cloud computing, edge computing, blockchain, Digital Twin technology, robotics, 5G/6G communication networks, and cyber-physical systems have accelerated innovation across engineering, healthcare, agriculture, environmental science, education, business, and public administration. These technologies support intelligent decision-making, resource optimisation, predictive analytics, automation, and evidence-based policymaking, thereby contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The multidisciplinary integration of technological innovation with sustainability principles has enabled the development of resilient smart cities, precision agriculture, intelligent healthcare systems, renewable energy management, digital education platforms, and sustainable manufacturing ecosystems.
This study investigates multidisciplinary research trends in smart technologies and sustainable development using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data collected from peer-reviewed journals, international reports, policy documents, and multidisciplinary case studies. The study explores emerging research themes, technological innovations, interdisciplinary collaborations, and practical applications across multiple sectors. Furthermore, it examines the role of AI-driven decision support systems, Digital Twins, intelligent automation, renewable energy technologies, circular economy practices, smart governance, and Industry 5.0 in promoting sustainable development.
The findings indicate that multidisciplinary smart technologies significantly improve operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, economic resilience, healthcare quality, educational accessibility, and public service delivery. AI-powered predictive analytics, IoT-enabled monitoring systems, blockchain-based transparency, and cloud-enabled collaborative platforms facilitate intelligent resource management and sustainable innovation. Integration of Digital Twins and explainable AI further enhances strategic planning, infrastructure optimisation, and policy evaluation.
Despite these advantages, significant challenges remain, including cybersecurity risks, data privacy concerns, digital inequality, interoperability limitations, ethical AI governance, workforce skill shortages, and financial constraints. The study concludes that multidisciplinary collaboration, responsible technological innovation, and sustainable digital transformation are fundamental to achieving resilient societies and advancing global sustainable development in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
