Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development: A Multidisciplinary Perspective

| Abstract | Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation have emerged as transformative forces for advancing sustainable development by addressing complex global challenges related to climate change, healthcare, food security, industrial productivity, education, energy efficiency, urbanisation, and public governance. The rapid evolution of technologies such as Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning, Generative AI, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics, cloud computing, edge computing, blockchain, Digital Twin technology, robotics, and cyber-physical systems has enabled intelligent automation, predictive analytics, real-time decision-making, and sustainable resource management across diverse sectors. These digital innovations contribute directly to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving environmental sustainability, economic resilience, and social inclusion. This study investigates the role of Artificial Intelligence and digital innovation in sustainable development using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data collected from peer-reviewed journals, international reports, government publications, and multidisciplinary case studies. The study examines AI-driven applications across healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, education, finance, environmental monitoring, renewable energy, transportation, and public administration. It further analyses how intelligent technologies facilitate digital transformation, optimise resource utilisation, enhance organisational performance, and promote evidence-based decision-making. The findings indicate that AI-powered predictive analytics, IoT-enabled monitoring systems, blockchain-based transparency, Digital Twin simulations, cloud-native infrastructures, and explainable AI significantly enhance sustainability outcomes through improved operational efficiency, reduced environmental impacts, increased productivity, and better public service delivery. These technologies support precision agriculture, intelligent healthcare systems, smart manufacturing, renewable energy forecasting, climate adaptation, and digital governance while fostering innovation and resilience. Despite these opportunities, widespread implementation faces challenges including cybersecurity threats, data privacy concerns, ethical AI governance, digital inequality, infrastructure limitations, interoperability issues, workforce skill shortages, and regulatory complexity. The study concludes that responsible AI adoption, interdisciplinary collaboration, inclusive digital policies, and sustainable innovation ecosystems are essential for maximising the long-term societal benefits of AI and digital innovation while accelerating progress towards global sustainable development. |
