Industry 5.0: Human-Centric Manufacturing Through Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

Abstract Industry 5.0 represents the next evolution of industrial development, shifting the focus from automation-centered manufacturing to human-centric, sustainable, and resilient production systems. Unlike Industry 4.0, which primarily emphasized cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and automation, Industry 5.0 promotes collaboration between humans and intelligent machines through Artificial Intelligence (AI), collaborative robotics (cobots), digital twins, edge computing, additive manufacturing, and advanced data analytics. This paradigm aims to combine human creativity, critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities with the computational intelligence, precision, and efficiency of AI-driven systems. Human–machine collaboration enables manufacturers to achieve higher productivity, product customization, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability while improving worker safety and well-being.
This study examines the role of Artificial Intelligence and robotics in enabling Industry 5.0 through a multidisciplinary perspective. Employing a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data from manufacturing engineering, industrial automation, computer science, robotics, operations management, and sustainability literature, the study explores technological architectures, industrial applications, implementation challenges, workforce transformation, ethical considerations, and future research directions. Particular attention is given to collaborative robots, explainable AI, predictive maintenance, smart factories, digital twins, and sustainable manufacturing ecosystems.
The findings indicate that integrating AI and robotics within Industry 5.0 significantly improves production efficiency, quality control, operational resilience, workforce productivity, and mass customization while preserving the central role of human expertise in manufacturing. However, successful implementation requires digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, workforce reskilling, interoperability, transparent AI governance, and strong collaboration among industry, academia, and policymakers. The study concludes that Industry 5.0 provides a sustainable framework for intelligent manufacturing by integrating technological innovation with human-centered values, environmental responsibility, and economic competitiveness.
