Emerging Innovations in Green Building Technologies and Sustainable Infrastructure

| Abstract | Green building technologies and sustainable infrastructure have become central to addressing global challenges related to climate change, rapid urbanization, resource depletion, and environmental degradation. The construction sector is responsible for a significant share of global energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and natural resource utilization, making sustainable innovation essential for achieving long-term environmental, economic, and social development. Emerging technologies—including Building Information Modeling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twins, smart materials, renewable energy systems, green roofs, advanced insulation materials, energy-efficient HVAC systems, rainwater harvesting, and intelligent building management systems—are transforming the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of sustainable buildings and resilient infrastructure. These technologies improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, optimize resource utilization, enhance occupant comfort, and support circular economy principles. This study investigates emerging innovations in green building technologies and sustainable infrastructure through a multidisciplinary perspective. Employing a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data from civil engineering, architecture, environmental science, construction management, urban planning, energy engineering, and sustainability literature, the study examines technological developments, engineering applications, sustainability contributions, implementation challenges, governance mechanisms, and future research directions. Particular emphasis is placed on net-zero buildings, smart infrastructure, renewable energy integration, intelligent construction management, resilient urban development, and environmental performance assessment. The findings indicate that emerging green building technologies significantly improve energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, infrastructure resilience, operational performance, and lifecycle cost management while supporting global sustainable development goals. However, challenges including high initial investment, technological integration, regulatory complexity, workforce competency, material availability, and long-term performance monitoring remain significant barriers to widespread implementation. The study concludes that integrating green building technologies with intelligent digital systems and sustainable engineering practices provides a comprehensive pathway toward resilient, low-carbon, and environmentally responsible infrastructure development. |
