Advances in Robotics and Intelligent Automation for Industry 5.0

| Abstract | Industry 5.0 represents the next evolution of industrial transformation by emphasizing human-centric, sustainable, and resilient manufacturing through the integration of advanced robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), intelligent automation, collaborative robotics (cobots), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Digital Twins, edge computing, cloud manufacturing, and cyber-physical systems. Unlike Industry 4.0, which primarily focuses on automation and digitalization, Industry 5.0 seeks to establish effective collaboration between intelligent machines and human expertise to improve productivity, flexibility, innovation, sustainability, and worker well-being. Advanced robotic technologies enable autonomous decision-making, adaptive production, predictive maintenance, intelligent quality inspection, and real-time process optimization while supporting mass customization and environmentally responsible manufacturing. These innovations are transforming industrial sectors including automotive, aerospace, electronics, healthcare, logistics, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and precision engineering. This study investigates advances in robotics and intelligent automation for Industry 5.0 through a multidisciplinary perspective. Using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data from robotics, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, information systems, sustainability, and management literature, the study examines enabling technologies, industrial applications, sustainability contributions, implementation challenges, governance mechanisms, and future research directions. Particular emphasis is placed on collaborative robots, autonomous mobile robots, AI-driven manufacturing, Digital Twins, intelligent inspection systems, robotic process automation, edge AI, and human–robot collaboration. The findings indicate that Industry 5.0 significantly improves manufacturing productivity, operational flexibility, precision, sustainability, workforce safety, and organizational resilience while enabling personalized production and intelligent decision-making. However, challenges including high implementation costs, cybersecurity risks, interoperability limitations, workforce reskilling, ethical governance, regulatory compliance, and digital infrastructure remain significant barriers to widespread industrial adoption. The study concludes that integrating advanced robotics with intelligent automation and human expertise provides a comprehensive foundation for resilient, sustainable, and innovation-driven manufacturing ecosystems. |
