Sustainable Construction Technologies for Smart and Green Buildings

Abstract Sustainable construction technologies have become fundamental to developing smart and green buildings that minimize environmental impacts while improving energy efficiency, occupant well-being, and long-term economic performance. Rapid urbanization, increasing energy demand, climate change, resource depletion, and stringent environmental regulations have accelerated the adoption of sustainable building materials, intelligent building management systems, renewable energy integration, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), advanced insulation technologies, prefabrication, modular construction, and circular economy principles. Smart and green buildings integrate these innovations to optimize energy consumption, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, waste reduction, and lifecycle performance while contributing to sustainable urban development and carbon neutrality.
This study investigates sustainable construction technologies for smart and green buildings through a multidisciplinary perspective. Using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data from civil engineering, architecture, environmental science, construction management, urban planning, information technology, and sustainability literature, the study examines enabling technologies, sustainable building materials, intelligent infrastructure, implementation frameworks, environmental benefits, economic implications, governance mechanisms, challenges, and future research directions. Particular emphasis is placed on net-zero energy buildings, green building certification systems, renewable energy integration, intelligent building automation, digital construction technologies, and lifecycle sustainability assessment.
The findings indicate that sustainable construction technologies significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, optimize resource utilization, enhance occupant comfort, lower operational costs, and strengthen urban resilience. However, high initial investment costs, technical complexity, regulatory barriers, skills shortages, interoperability challenges, and limited public awareness remain significant obstacles to widespread adoption. The study concludes that integrating digital technologies, sustainable engineering practices, renewable energy systems, and circular construction principles provides a comprehensive pathway toward resilient, intelligent, and environmentally responsible buildings.
