Internet of Medical Things (IoMT): Revolutionizing Healthcare Delivery

| Abstract | The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has emerged as a transformative healthcare paradigm by integrating medical devices, wearable sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, big data analytics, edge computing, blockchain, and telemedicine into interconnected healthcare ecosystems. IoMT enables continuous patient monitoring, real-time health data collection, intelligent diagnostics, remote patient management, predictive healthcare analytics, and personalized treatment planning. The rapid adoption of smart medical devices—including wearable fitness trackers, smartwatches, implantable sensors, connected insulin pumps, intelligent infusion systems, ECG monitors, blood glucose monitors, pulse oximeters, and smart hospital equipment—has significantly improved healthcare accessibility, patient safety, clinical efficiency, and quality of care. IoMT also supports preventive healthcare by facilitating early disease detection, chronic disease management, emergency response, and data-driven clinical decision-making. This study investigates the role of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) in revolutionizing healthcare delivery through a multidisciplinary framework. Using a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data from healthcare, biomedical engineering, computer science, information technology, public health, and medical informatics literature, the study examines IoMT architecture, enabling technologies, intelligent healthcare applications, implementation frameworks, security and privacy challenges, regulatory considerations, and future research directions. Particular emphasis is placed on Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, digital twins, blockchain, electronic health records (EHRs), wearable healthcare technologies, telemedicine, and predictive analytics. The findings indicate that IoMT significantly improves patient monitoring, clinical decision-making, healthcare accessibility, operational efficiency, chronic disease management, emergency response, and personalized medicine while supporting sustainable healthcare systems. However, cybersecurity threats, interoperability issues, privacy concerns, regulatory compliance, data governance, device reliability, implementation costs, and digital health literacy remain major barriers to large-scale adoption. The study concludes that integrating IoMT with Artificial Intelligence, predictive analytics, secure digital infrastructure, and responsible governance provides a comprehensive pathway toward intelligent, patient-centered, and sustainable healthcare delivery. |
