Industry 5.0 and Human-Centric Manufacturing: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract Industry 5.0 represents the next evolution of industrial development by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), collaborative robotics (cobots), Internet of Things (IoT), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Digital Twins, Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Edge Computing, Additive Manufacturing, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and Human–Machine Collaboration to create intelligent, sustainable, and human-centric manufacturing systems. Unlike Industry 4.0, which primarily focuses on automation and digitalization, Industry 5.0 emphasizes the collaboration between human creativity and intelligent machines to achieve mass personalization, operational resilience, sustainability, and worker well-being. Human-centric manufacturing empowers employees through advanced technologies while enhancing productivity, product quality, occupational safety, innovation, and environmental sustainability.
This study investigates Industry 5.0 and human-centric manufacturing using a multidisciplinary perspective. A qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary data from engineering, manufacturing, industrial management, information systems, computer science, robotics, economics, and sustainability literature is employed to examine Industry 5.0 technologies, human–AI collaboration, intelligent production systems, implementation frameworks, governance mechanisms, ethical considerations, and future research directions. Particular emphasis is placed on collaborative robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, smart factories, predictive maintenance, sustainable manufacturing, circular economy principles, workforce transformation, and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI).
The findings indicate that Industry 5.0 significantly improves manufacturing flexibility, productivity, customization, quality assurance, worker safety, innovation capability, and environmental performance. Intelligent production systems support predictive maintenance, real-time decision-making, supply chain optimization, resource efficiency, and personalized manufacturing while strengthening organizational resilience. However, challenges including workforce skill gaps, cybersecurity risks, implementation costs, interoperability issues, ethical AI concerns, organizational resistance, regulatory uncertainty, and digital infrastructure limitations remain major barriers to widespread adoption. The study concludes that integrating Artificial Intelligence with human expertise, responsible innovation, and sustainable industrial strategies provides a comprehensive pathway toward resilient, inclusive, and future-ready manufacturing ecosystems.
