Industry 5.0 and Human-Centred Innovation: Transforming Manufacturing Through Robotics and Intelligent Systems

Abstract Industry 5.0 represents a significant evolution in manufacturing, moving beyond the technology-driven automation of Industry 4.0 towards a human-centred, sustainable, and resilient industrial paradigm. The integration of robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Digital Twins, machine learning, advanced sensing, and intelligent decision-support systems enables manufacturing organisations to combine machine precision and computational capabilities with human creativity, contextual knowledge, critical thinking, and ethical judgement. Rather than replacing workers, Industry 5.0 seeks to create collaborative environments in which humans and intelligent machines jointly perform complex manufacturing activities.
This study examines the role of human-centred innovation in Industry 5.0, with particular emphasis on robotics and intelligent systems. A qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary literature from manufacturing engineering, robotics, Artificial Intelligence, industrial management, human–computer interaction, and sustainability research is adopted. The study analyses the conceptual foundations of Industry 5.0, collaborative robotics, AI-enabled manufacturing, human–machine interaction, smart production systems, workforce transformation, sustainability, and implementation challenges. Particular attention is given to collaborative robots, intelligent quality inspection, predictive maintenance, adaptive production, human–AI decision-making, and personalised manufacturing.
The analysis indicates that human-centred Industry 5.0 systems can improve manufacturing flexibility, productivity, product quality, workplace safety, resource efficiency, and innovation capacity. However, successful implementation requires workforce reskilling, appropriate human–robot interaction design, cybersecurity, explainable AI, data governance, interoperability, and organisational change. The study concludes that the future of manufacturing will depend not simply on greater automation, but on the intelligent integration of human expertise and advanced technological capabilities to create productive, sustainable, resilient, and socially responsible industrial ecosystems.
