Interdisciplinary Applications of Internet of Things Technologies for Healthcare, Agriculture, and Environmental Monitoring

Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a transformative technological paradigm that connects physical objects, sensors, machines, individuals, and digital platforms to facilitate continuous data collection, communication, analysis, and intelligent decision-making. Its interdisciplinary applications have expanded significantly across healthcare, agriculture, and environmental monitoring, where real-time information and automated responses can address complex societal and sustainability challenges. In healthcare, IoT-enabled wearable devices, remote patient monitoring systems, smart medical equipment, and connected health platforms support continuous health assessment and personalised care. In agriculture, IoT technologies enable precision farming through soil sensors, automated irrigation, crop monitoring, weather stations, and livestock tracking. Environmental monitoring applications employ connected sensors and networks to measure air quality, water quality, temperature, humidity, soil conditions, biodiversity indicators, and other ecological parameters.
This study investigates the interdisciplinary applications of IoT across healthcare, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. A qualitative and analytical research methodology based on secondary literature in IoT, healthcare technology, precision agriculture, environmental science, data analytics, and sustainable development is employed. The study develops an interdisciplinary framework linking sensing technologies, communication networks, cloud and edge computing, Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, and decision-support systems. The findings indicate that IoT can improve real-time monitoring, resource efficiency, early detection of risks, operational decision-making, service accessibility, and sustainability. However, challenges involving cybersecurity, data privacy, interoperability, network connectivity, device reliability, cost, energy consumption, and technical skills continue to constrain widespread adoption. The study concludes that interdisciplinary IoT ecosystems can contribute significantly to intelligent healthcare, sustainable agriculture, and environmental protection when supported by appropriate technical infrastructure, governance mechanisms, data standards, and human-centred implementation strategies.
