Smart Manufacturing and Digital Supply Chains in the Era of Industry 4.0 and 5.0

| Abstract | The emergence of Industry 4.0 and the transition toward Industry 5.0 are fundamentally reshaping manufacturing systems and supply-chain management. Industry 4.0 emphasises automation, connectivity, cyber-physical systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, big-data analytics, robotics, and digital twins, while Industry 5.0 extends this technological foundation by placing greater emphasis on human-centricity, sustainability, resilience, and collaboration between humans and intelligent machines. This study examines the transformation of smart manufacturing and digital supply chains in the context of Industry 4.0 and 5.0. A qualitative and analytical methodology based on secondary literature is adopted to examine the role of emerging technologies in production planning, predictive maintenance, quality management, logistics, inventory management, demand forecasting, supplier coordination, and supply-chain resilience. The analysis indicates that interconnected manufacturing and supply-chain systems can improve operational visibility, production flexibility, resource efficiency, responsiveness, and decision-making. However, technological fragmentation, cybersecurity risks, high implementation costs, data-quality problems, workforce skill gaps, interoperability challenges, and organisational resistance remain major barriers. The study argues that the transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 should not be understood simply as greater automation. Instead, it represents a shift toward intelligent, resilient, sustainable, and human-centred industrial ecosystems. The study concludes that organisations combining digital technologies with workforce development, collaborative decision-making, sustainability principles, and robust governance will be better positioned to achieve long-term industrial competitiveness |
