Digital Transformation and Sustainability Performance in Modern Enterprises

| Abstract | Digital transformation has emerged as a major strategic mechanism through which modern enterprises can improve operational efficiency, competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability performance. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, big-data analytics, blockchain, automation, and digital platforms is changing how organisations manage resources, design products, coordinate supply chains, and engage with stakeholders. This study examines the relationship between digital transformation and sustainability performance in modern enterprises, with particular emphasis on environmental, economic, and social dimensions. A qualitative and analytical methodology based on secondary research is adopted to examine how digital technologies contribute to resource efficiency, energy optimisation, waste reduction, sustainable supply-chain management, employee development, and responsible corporate governance. The study proposes an integrated digital sustainability framework consisting of digital infrastructure, data integration, intelligent analytics, sustainable process transformation, performance measurement, and continuous improvement. The analysis indicates that digital transformation can significantly strengthen sustainability performance when technological investments are strategically aligned with environmental and social objectives. However, digitalisation can also create new sustainability challenges through increased energy consumption, electronic waste, cybersecurity risks, data privacy concerns, and digital inequality. The study concludes that enterprises should move from technology-centred digital transformation toward sustainability-oriented digital transformation, in which digital technologies are deliberately deployed to generate measurable long-term environmental, economic, and social value. |
