Technology-Enabled Solutions for Global Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture

Abstract Global food systems face increasing pressure from population growth, climate change, land and water degradation, resource scarcity, geopolitical disruptions, and changing consumption patterns. Technology-enabled solutions provide significant opportunities to improve agricultural productivity while strengthening environmental sustainability and food-system resilience. Technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing, satellite imagery, drones, precision agriculture, biotechnology, blockchain, robotics, and digital agricultural platforms are transforming conventional farming and food-supply systems. This study examines the role of technology-enabled solutions in improving global food security and supporting sustainable agriculture. A qualitative and analytical methodology based on secondary research is adopted to examine technological applications across agricultural production, resource management, supply chains, climate adaptation, and food distribution. The study proposes an integrated technology-enabled food-security framework involving digital data collection, intelligent analytics, precision resource management, sustainable production, transparent supply chains, and continuous monitoring. The analysis indicates that technology can improve crop productivity, reduce water and fertiliser consumption, identify crop diseases, minimise post-harvest losses, improve market access, and strengthen climate resilience. Nevertheless, barriers including high technology costs, inadequate digital infrastructure, limited technical skills, data ownership concerns, cybersecurity risks, and unequal access may prevent smallholder farmers from benefiting equally. The study concludes that technology should be integrated with farmer knowledge, institutional support, sustainable agricultural practices, and inclusive policies. Achieving global food security requires not merely greater agricultural production but a technologically enabled food system that is productive, resilient, resource-efficient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.
