The Role of Innovation Hubs and Research Ecosystems in Regional Economic Development

Abstract Innovation has become a central driver of regional economic development, particularly as economies increasingly depend on knowledge, technology, entrepreneurship, and research-based industries. Innovation hubs and research ecosystems provide institutional and physical environments in which universities, research organisations, enterprises, start-ups, investors, government agencies, and communities can interact to generate knowledge, commercialise research, develop new businesses, and create employment. This study examines the role of innovation hubs and research ecosystems in promoting regional economic development, with particular attention to knowledge transfer, entrepreneurship, employment generation, investment attraction, technological development, and regional competitiveness. A qualitative and comparative research methodology based on secondary literature, institutional reports, and studies of innovation ecosystems is adopted. The analysis indicates that regions with strong connections between research institutions, industry, government, and entrepreneurial networks are better positioned to convert knowledge into commercially valuable products and services. Innovation hubs can reduce barriers to entrepreneurship by providing infrastructure, mentoring, networking opportunities, technical resources, and access to finance. However, their effectiveness depends on institutional capacity, availability of skilled human capital, investment, connectivity, governance, and inclusive participation. The study concludes that innovation hubs should not operate as isolated incubators but as interconnected components of broader regional research and innovation ecosystems. Effective ecosystem development requires long-term collaboration among universities, industry, government, investors, and local communities.
