Digital Technologies for Sustainable Energy Management and Carbon Reduction

Abstract The transition towards low-carbon energy systems increasingly depends on the integration of digital technologies with energy infrastructure. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) devices, smart meters, cloud computing, edge computing, blockchain, digital twins, and advanced data analytics are enabling organisations, households, industries, and cities to monitor energy consumption, optimise resource allocation, integrate renewable energy, and reduce carbon emissions. This study examines the role of digital technologies in sustainable energy management and carbon reduction, with particular emphasis on smart grids, intelligent buildings, industrial energy systems, renewable-energy integration, and data-driven energy optimisation. A qualitative and comparative methodology based on secondary literature is adopted to analyse the technological mechanisms through which digitalisation can improve energy efficiency and support decarbonisation. The analysis indicates that digital technologies can enhance real-time monitoring, demand forecasting, predictive maintenance, automated energy management, and renewable-energy coordination. However, digitalisation itself creates additional energy demand through data centres, communication networks, and connected devices and introduces challenges concerning cybersecurity, data privacy, interoperability, investment costs, and digital inequality. The study argues that digital transformation should therefore be accompanied by energy-efficient computing, renewable-powered digital infrastructure, responsible data governance, and lifecycle-based assessment. A human-centred and system-wide approach can enable digital technologies to contribute more effectively to long-term sustainable energy transitions and carbon reduction.
