Abstract Digital innovation has emerged as a powerful catalyst for sustainable development and social progress by transforming how societies produce, communicate, govern, educate, and deliver essential services. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, blockchain, big-data analytics, mobile technologies, and digital platforms are creating new opportunities to address economic, environmental, and social challenges. This study examines the role of digital innovation in advancing sustainable development and improving social wellbeing. A qualitative and conceptual research methodology based on secondary literature is employed to analyse the contribution of digital technologies to sustainable economic growth, environmental management, healthcare, education, financial inclusion, governance, and community development. The analysis indicates that digital innovation can improve resource efficiency, expand access to services, strengthen institutional capacity, support data-driven decision-making, and create new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. However, digital transformation can also generate challenges, including the digital divide, cybersecurity threats, privacy concerns, electronic waste, algorithmic bias, and unequal distribution of technological benefits. The study proposes an integrated digital-sustainability framework based on technological innovation, inclusive access, environmental responsibility, social empowerment, and ethical governance. The study concludes that digital innovation can significantly contribute to sustainable development when technology is deployed in a human-centred and inclusive manner. Digital transformation should therefore be evaluated not only according to technological advancement but also according to its contribution to environmental sustainability, social equity, economic opportunity, and quality of life.
