Interdisciplinary Approaches to Technology, Innovation, and Global Sustainable Development

| Abstract | Global sustainable development increasingly depends on the ability to address complex challenges that cannot be solved within the boundaries of a single academic discipline. Climate change, poverty, food insecurity, public-health inequalities, biodiversity loss, energy transitions, digital inequality, and resource scarcity are interconnected problems requiring collaboration among science, technology, economics, social sciences, environmental studies, engineering, public policy, and humanities. In this context, interdisciplinary approaches to technology and innovation provide an important framework for developing integrated and context-sensitive solutions to sustainable-development challenges. This study examines the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in connecting technological innovation with the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Through a qualitative and comparative analysis of academic literature, international development frameworks, and contemporary technology trends, the study evaluates the contribution of interdisciplinary approaches to renewable energy, smart cities, sustainable agriculture, healthcare, digital inclusion, circular economies, and climate resilience. The findings indicate that interdisciplinary collaboration can improve innovation outcomes by combining technical expertise with social knowledge, economic analysis, institutional understanding, and community perspectives. However, disciplinary boundaries, communication difficulties, fragmented funding structures, institutional resistance, unequal access to technological resources, and differences in research methodologies can constrain interdisciplinary collaboration. The study concludes that sustainable innovation requires integrated knowledge systems, collaborative governance, inclusive technological development, and stronger partnerships among universities, governments, businesses, civil society, and local communities. |
