Emerging Technologies, Multidisciplinary Research, and the Future of Sustainable Innovation

| Abstract | The rapid emergence of artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, Internet of Things, biotechnology, robotics, blockchain, renewable-energy technologies, digital twins, and advanced materials is transforming the global innovation landscape. At the same time, climate change, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, inequality, energy insecurity, and rapidly changing socioeconomic conditions require innovation systems capable of addressing complex and interconnected challenges. This study examines the relationship between emerging technologies, multidisciplinary research, and sustainable innovation. A qualitative and conceptual research approach is adopted through an analysis of contemporary research on technological innovation, sustainability transitions, multidisciplinary collaboration, and responsible technology development. The study explores how emerging technologies can contribute to sustainable agriculture, healthcare, energy systems, smart cities, circular economies, environmental monitoring, and climate adaptation. It further examines the importance of multidisciplinary research in integrating technical, environmental, economic, social, and policy perspectives. The findings suggest that technological advancement alone does not guarantee sustainable outcomes. Sustainable innovation requires collaboration among engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, economics, management, public policy, and local communities. Major barriers include fragmented research structures, unequal technological access, inadequate digital infrastructure, ethical risks, cybersecurity threats, limited funding, skills shortages, and difficulties in translating research into practical applications. The study proposes an integrated framework based on technological capability, multidisciplinary knowledge integration, responsible governance, human-centred design, and continuous innovation. It concludes that the future of sustainable innovation will depend on the ability of societies to combine technological progress with environmental responsibility, social inclusion, and long-term economic resilience. |
