Autonomous Intelligent Systems and Their Role in Next-Generation Industrial Innovation

| Abstract | Autonomous Intelligent Systems (AIS) are emerging as a transformative technological paradigm for next-generation industrial innovation. The convergence of artificial intelligence, robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing, digital twins, advanced analytics, and autonomous decision-making is enabling industrial systems to operate with increasing levels of perception, adaptation, coordination, and self-optimisation. Unlike conventional automation, which generally performs predefined tasks under fixed conditions, autonomous intelligent systems can interpret changing environments, learn from operational data, make decisions, and modify their actions with limited human intervention. This study examines the role of autonomous intelligent systems in transforming industrial processes, production systems, supply chains, maintenance, quality management, logistics, and resource optimisation. A qualitative and conceptual research methodology is adopted to analyse the technological foundations, applications, opportunities, challenges, and future directions of industrial autonomy. The study considers intelligent robotics, autonomous mobile robots, collaborative robots, predictive maintenance, digital twins, edge intelligence, multi-agent systems, and AI-enabled decision support. The analysis indicates that autonomous intelligent systems can improve operational flexibility, productivity, predictive capabilities, resource utilisation, and responsiveness to market and environmental changes. However, challenges involving cybersecurity, safety, explainability, workforce transformation, interoperability, data governance, reliability, and accountability remain significant. The study proposes an integrated framework in which autonomous systems operate within human-supervised industrial ecosystems. It concludes that next-generation industrial innovation will depend not simply on replacing human labour with autonomous machines, but on developing intelligent human-machine ecosystems capable of continuous learning, adaptation, collaboration, and responsible decision-making. |
