Abstract The rapid expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, intelligent sensors, autonomous systems, and connected infrastructure has created an increasing demand for real-time decision-making capabilities. Conventional cloud-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) architectures often require continuous transmission of data to centralized servers, which can introduce latency, bandwidth requirements, privacy concerns, and reliability limitations. Edge Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI) addresses these challenges by deploying AI models and computational capabilities closer to the location where data are generated. This study examines the role of Edge AI in supporting real-time decision-making in smart environments through a qualitative and comparative analysis of contemporary research. The study investigates Edge AI architectures, real-time analytics, intelligent IoT systems, smart cities, healthcare, industrial environments, transportation, and energy management. Particular attention is given to latency reduction, distributed intelligence, privacy, resource efficiency, scalability, and system reliability. The analysis indicates that Edge AI can significantly improve the responsiveness of intelligent systems by enabling local data processing and rapid inference. However, challenges related to computational constraints, energy consumption, model optimization, cybersecurity, heterogeneous hardware, and AI model management remain significant. The study concludes that Edge AI represents an important technological foundation for next-generation smart environments and that future systems will increasingly combine edge computing, cloud intelligence, 5G/6G connectivity, federated learning, and lightweight AI models to achieve reliable and secure real-time decision-making.
