Technology Adoption and Productivity Growth in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

| Abstract | Technology adoption has become an important determinant of productivity, competitiveness, and long-term survival among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Digital technologies such as cloud computing, enterprise software, artificial intelligence, data analytics, e-commerce, mobile applications, automation, and digital payment systems are increasingly transforming how SMEs conduct business. However, the adoption of technology among SMEs remains uneven because of financial constraints, limited technical expertise, inadequate digital infrastructure, organizational resistance, cybersecurity concerns, and uncertainty regarding returns on investment. This study examines the relationship between technology adoption and productivity growth in SMEs through a qualitative and comparative analysis of existing literature. It focuses on technological, organizational, financial, and environmental factors influencing adoption decisions and evaluates the potential effects of technology on operational efficiency, innovation, market expansion, employee productivity, and business resilience. The study argues that technology adoption can generate substantial productivity improvements when technological investments are accompanied by employee training, process redesign, managerial support, and appropriate organizational capabilities. Merely purchasing digital technologies does not necessarily result in productivity gains. SMEs must integrate technology with business strategy and organizational processes to realize its full value. The study further identifies the importance of government support, digital infrastructure, financial accessibility, technology partnerships, and SME-oriented training programmes. The findings suggest that technology adoption should be viewed as a continuous organizational transformation process rather than a one-time investment. The study concludes that SMEs capable of combining appropriate technologies with human capabilities, organizational learning, and strategic management are better positioned to achieve sustainable productivity growth and competitiveness in increasingly digital markets. |
