The Role of Innovation Leadership in Accelerating Digital Transformation and Organizational Sustainability

Abstract Digital transformation has emerged as a strategic priority for organisations seeking to improve competitiveness, operational efficiency, adaptability, and long-term sustainability. However, successful digital transformation depends not only on technological investment but also on leadership capabilities that encourage innovation, organisational learning, experimentation, and strategic change. Innovation leadership plays a particularly important role by creating an organisational environment in which emerging technologies can be adopted and aligned with broader sustainability objectives. This study examines the role of innovation leadership in accelerating digital transformation and organisational sustainability. A qualitative and conceptual research methodology based on secondary literature is adopted to examine the relationships among innovation-oriented leadership, digital transformation capabilities, organisational innovation, and sustainability performance. The study proposes an integrated framework in which innovation leadership influences digital transformation through strategic vision, technological readiness, employee empowerment, organisational learning, risk tolerance, and cross-functional collaboration. Digital transformation subsequently contributes to sustainability through resource efficiency, process optimisation, data-driven decision-making, resilient business models, and stakeholder engagement. The study also identifies challenges including resistance to change, skills shortages, cybersecurity risks, digital inequality, short-term performance pressures, and insufficient alignment between digital strategies and sustainability goals. The findings suggest that organisations should treat innovation leadership as a strategic capability rather than an individual managerial characteristic. Leaders who combine technological awareness with sustainability-oriented decision-making can create stronger conditions for responsible digital transformation and long-term organisational value creation.
