Digital Platforms and Entrepreneurial Innovation: Creating New Opportunities in the Global Digital Economy

Abstract Digital platforms have fundamentally transformed entrepreneurial activity by reducing transaction costs, facilitating access to global markets, enabling scalable business models, and connecting entrepreneurs with customers, suppliers, investors, workers, and other ecosystem participants. Platforms such as digital marketplaces, social-commerce networks, financial technology applications, app ecosystems, and business-to-business platforms have created new opportunities for entrepreneurship while simultaneously introducing challenges related to competition, platform dependency, data governance, cybersecurity, and digital inequality. This study examines the role of digital platforms in promoting entrepreneurial innovation and creating new opportunities in the global digital economy. A qualitative and conceptual methodology based on secondary literature is adopted to analyse the relationships among platform capabilities, entrepreneurial opportunity recognition, digital innovation, ecosystem participation, and business performance. The study proposes an integrated framework in which digital infrastructure, platform access, data-driven intelligence, network effects, and ecosystem collaboration enable entrepreneurs to identify and exploit new market opportunities. The analysis demonstrates that digital platforms can lower entry barriers and support rapid experimentation, internationalisation, customer engagement, and resource mobilisation. However, platform-based entrepreneurship can also create dependence on platform owners, unequal bargaining power, algorithmic uncertainty, and heightened exposure to digital risks. The study concludes that entrepreneurial success in the global digital economy increasingly depends on the ability of entrepreneurs to combine platform capabilities with innovation, strategic flexibility, digital skills, customer knowledge, and responsible data practices.
