Artificial Intelligence and Social Sustainability: Technology-Based Approaches to Inclusive Economic Development

| Abstract | Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing economic systems, labour markets, public services, education, healthcare, and social development. While AI has considerable potential to improve productivity and generate new economic opportunities, its contribution to sustainable development depends on whether technological benefits are distributed equitably across society. This study examines the relationship between AI and social sustainability, focusing on technology-based approaches to inclusive economic development. A qualitative and conceptual research methodology based on secondary literature is adopted to examine how AI can support employment creation, financial inclusion, accessible education, healthcare delivery, public-service efficiency, entrepreneurship, and participation in the digital economy. The study proposes an integrated framework connecting AI capabilities with social sustainability outcomes through four principal mechanisms: access, empowerment, inclusion, and resilience. The analysis also identifies risks associated with algorithmic bias, employment displacement, digital inequality, privacy concerns, unequal access to AI infrastructure, and concentration of technological power. The findings suggest that AI can contribute meaningfully to inclusive economic development when it is deployed alongside appropriate governance, digital infrastructure, workforce reskilling, inclusive innovation policies, and mechanisms for accountability. Rather than treating AI as an independent technological solution, organisations and governments should integrate AI within broader social-development strategies. The study concludes that socially sustainable AI requires a human-centred approach in which technological innovation is aligned with equality of opportunity, decent work, social participation, and long-term societal wellbeing. |
