Innovation and Resilience in Supply Chains: The Role of AI, Digital Twins and Predictive Intelligence

| Abstract | Global supply chains are increasingly exposed to disruptions arising from geopolitical instability, climate-related events, pandemics, cyber threats, transportation bottlenecks, demand volatility, and supplier failures. These challenges have increased the importance of supply-chain resilience and encouraged organisations to adopt advanced digital technologies. Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital twins, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and predictive intelligence are transforming supply-chain management from predominantly reactive systems into more proactive and adaptive ecosystems. This study examines the role of AI, digital twins, and predictive intelligence in strengthening supply-chain innovation and resilience. A qualitative and conceptual research methodology based on secondary literature is employed to examine how these technologies support demand forecasting, risk identification, scenario simulation, inventory optimisation, supplier management, logistics planning, and disruption recovery. The study proposes an integrated framework in which real-time data from physical supply-chain operations feeds a digital representation of the supply network, while AI and predictive analytics generate forecasts, risk alerts, and recommended responses. The analysis suggests that the combination of predictive intelligence and digital twins can improve organisational visibility, scenario planning, responsiveness, and decision quality. However, successful implementation is constrained by data-quality problems, interoperability challenges, cybersecurity threats, implementation costs, organisational resistance, and shortages of specialised skills. The study concludes that technology alone does not guarantee resilience. Sustainable supply-chain resilience requires the integration of digital capabilities with organisational agility, supplier collaboration, human expertise, governance, and contingency planning. AI and digital twins should therefore be viewed not merely as automation tools but as strategic technologies for building adaptive, transparent, and continuously learning supply-chain ecosystems. |
