Intelligent Water Systems: Applying Artificial Intelligence and Sensor Technologies for Sustainable Water Management

| Abstract | Growing population, climate variability, urbanisation, industrialisation, and increasing competition for freshwater resources have created significant challenges for sustainable water management. Conventional water-management systems often depend on periodic monitoring, manual inspection, and fragmented data, limiting their ability to respond rapidly to changing conditions. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, remote sensing, predictive analytics, digital twins, and automated control systems offers new opportunities to develop intelligent water systems capable of real-time monitoring, prediction, optimisation, and adaptive management. This paper examines the application of AI and sensor technologies across water supply, irrigation, wastewater treatment, groundwater management, flood prediction, leakage detection, and water-quality monitoring. A qualitative and descriptive methodology based on secondary literature is employed to analyse technological applications, benefits, challenges, and future directions. The study proposes an integrated intelligent water-management framework connecting sensor networks, data platforms, AI analytics, decision-support systems, and automated interventions. The analysis indicates that AI-enabled water systems can improve leak detection, demand forecasting, water-quality assessment, infrastructure maintenance, irrigation efficiency, and climate resilience. Nevertheless, high deployment costs, sensor reliability, data-quality problems, cybersecurity risks, interoperability limitations, skills shortages, and unequal technological access remain important barriers. The study concludes that intelligent water management should combine advanced technology with institutional capacity, environmental sustainability, human oversight, and participatory governance to create resilient and resource-efficient water systems. |
