Human-Centred Automation: Balancing Artificial Intelligence, Workforce Transformation and Organizational Well-Being

Abstract The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, intelligent software, and automated decision-support systems is transforming the contemporary workplace. While automation can improve productivity, operational efficiency, accuracy, and service delivery, it can also generate concerns regarding job displacement, skill obsolescence, work intensification, employee autonomy, surveillance, and psychological well-being. This paper examines the concept of human-centred automation as an approach that places human capabilities, dignity, participation, and well-being at the centre of technological transformation. A qualitative and conceptual methodology based on secondary literature is adopted to examine AI-enabled automation, workforce transformation, human–AI collaboration, reskilling, job redesign, employee autonomy, organizational culture, and responsible technology governance. The paper proposes an integrated human-centred automation framework consisting of five interconnected dimensions: human participation, augmentation rather than replacement, continuous learning, responsible AI governance, and organizational well-being. The analysis suggests that the consequences of automation depend not only on technological capability but also on how organizations design jobs, distribute decision authority, manage change, and support employees. Automation can create substantial value when routine and hazardous tasks are delegated to machines while humans retain responsibility for complex judgement, creativity, interpersonal interaction, and ethical decision-making. However, poorly designed automation may increase work intensity, reduce autonomy, and create technological insecurity. The study argues that organizations should move beyond technology-first approaches and adopt human-centred transformation strategies that combine productivity objectives with workforce development and well-being. The future of automation should therefore be understood not simply as a transition from human work to machine work, but as the redesign of work around complementary human and technological capabilities.
