Advanced Water Treatment Technologies: Integrating Intelligent Monitoring, Resource Recovery and Sustainable Infrastructure

Abstract Rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, climate variability, and increasing water demand are placing unprecedented pressure on freshwater resources and conventional water-treatment infrastructure. Advanced water-treatment technologies are therefore evolving from isolated treatment processes into integrated systems that combine intelligent monitoring, resource recovery, energy efficiency, digitalisation, and sustainable infrastructure. This paper examines emerging approaches for improving water quality and resource efficiency through the integration of advanced oxidation processes, membrane technologies, biological treatment, sensor networks, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things platforms, and resource-recovery systems. A qualitative and conceptual methodology is adopted to evaluate how intelligent monitoring can improve operational decision-making while enabling wastewater to be viewed as a source of water, energy, nutrients, and valuable materials rather than merely as waste. The study develops an integrated framework connecting real-time sensing, predictive analytics, adaptive treatment, resource recovery, renewable energy, and circular water management. Key challenges include high capital expenditure, membrane fouling, energy consumption, sensor reliability, cybersecurity, data quality, complex maintenance requirements, and unequal access to advanced infrastructure. The analysis indicates that future water systems will increasingly depend on decentralised treatment, digital twins, predictive maintenance, AI-assisted optimisation, energy-positive wastewater facilities, and water reuse. The paper concludes that integrating technological innovation with sustainable infrastructure planning can improve treatment reliability, reduce environmental impacts, increase resource efficiency, and support long-term water security.
