Energy-Active Buildings and Intelligent Urban Systems: Redefining Sustainable Infrastructure through Technology

Abstract Rapid urbanisation, increasing energy demand, climate change, and the need to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions are transforming the way buildings and cities are designed and operated. Conventional buildings primarily consume energy, whereas energy-active buildings seek to generate, store, manage, and exchange energy while responding dynamically to changing environmental and operational conditions. At the urban scale, intelligent systems integrate buildings with renewable energy, electric mobility, energy storage, smart grids, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and data-driven management platforms. This paper examines the technological foundations and sustainability implications of energy-active buildings and intelligent urban systems. A qualitative and conceptual methodology is adopted to analyse renewable energy integration, building energy management systems, smart sensors, AI-assisted optimisation, energy storage, demand response, electric vehicles, and interconnected urban infrastructure. The study proposes an integrated framework in which buildings function as both energy consumers and distributed energy resources. Particular attention is given to the role of digital twins, predictive analytics, automated controls, and real-time monitoring in improving energy efficiency and system resilience. Major challenges include high initial investment, interoperability, cybersecurity, data privacy, technical complexity, occupant behaviour, and unequal access to smart infrastructure. The paper concludes that the integration of energy-active buildings with intelligent urban systems can contribute significantly to low-carbon cities, energy resilience, and sustainable infrastructure, provided that technological innovation is supported by appropriate policy, standards, financing mechanisms, and human-centred design.
