Spatial Intelligence and Context-Aware Computing: Emerging Applications in Smart Environments and Autonomous Systems

Abstract The convergence of artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensor networks, edge computing, robotics, and geospatial technologies is creating a new generation of intelligent systems capable of understanding not only data but also the spatial and contextual relationships within physical environments. Spatial intelligence refers to the ability of computational systems to perceive, represent, reason about, and interact with objects, locations, distances, movements, and relationships within physical or virtual spaces. Context-aware computing complements this capability by enabling systems to adapt their behaviour according to environmental, temporal, behavioural, social, and user-specific conditions. Together, these technologies provide the foundation for smart environments and autonomous systems capable of interpreting complex surroundings and responding dynamically to changing conditions. This paper examines the conceptual foundations, technological architecture, applications, challenges, and future directions of spatial intelligence and context-aware computing. A conceptual qualitative methodology is adopted to analyse applications across smart homes, intelligent transportation, healthcare, industrial environments, urban infrastructure, robotics, and autonomous vehicles. The study proposes an integrated framework combining multimodal sensing, spatial representation, contextual reasoning, edge intelligence, decision-making, and adaptive action. The analysis demonstrates that spatially intelligent systems can improve environmental awareness, resource optimisation, safety, navigation, personalised services, and autonomous decision-making. However, challenges involving sensor uncertainty, privacy, interoperability, computational requirements, explainability, cybersecurity, and ethical governance remain significant. The paper argues that future intelligent environments will increasingly operate as adaptive spatial ecosystems in which AI continuously interprets physical surroundings and contextual signals to support or autonomously perform complex activities.
