Robotics for Healthcare and Assisted Living: Intelligent Systems for Ageing, Rehabilitation and Independent Living

| Abstract | Robotics is increasingly transforming healthcare and assisted living by providing intelligent systems capable of supporting older adults, individuals undergoing rehabilitation, patients with disabilities, and people requiring continuous assistance in daily activities. Advances in artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensors, human–robot interaction, soft robotics, wearable robotics, and autonomous navigation have expanded the capabilities of healthcare robots beyond conventional industrial applications. This paper examines the emerging role of robotics in ageing, rehabilitation, independent living, clinical assistance, and long-term care. A conceptual qualitative methodology is adopted to analyse major robotic technologies, application domains, benefits, implementation challenges, and future research opportunities. Particular attention is given to socially assistive robots, rehabilitation robots, robotic exoskeletons, mobility-support systems, intelligent medication assistance, telepresence robots, robotic caregivers, and smart-home integration. The paper proposes an Integrated Healthcare Robotics Framework connecting perception, artificial intelligence, physical assistance, human–robot interaction, healthcare data, and adaptive decision support. Robotics can potentially reduce caregiver workload, improve rehabilitation adherence, support mobility, enhance safety, and enable older adults to remain independent for longer periods. However, challenges involving safety, reliability, affordability, privacy, emotional acceptance, clinical validation, interoperability, cybersecurity, and ethical responsibility remain significant. The paper argues that successful healthcare robotics should not seek to replace human caregivers but rather augment human capabilities through collaborative and context-aware systems. Future progress will depend on combining robotics with artificial intelligence, digital health platforms, wearable sensors, ambient intelligence, and personalised care models. The study concludes that intelligent healthcare robotics has the potential to become a critical component of sustainable ageing and healthcare delivery when designed around human needs, dignity, safety, autonomy, and accessibility. |
