Digital Technologies for Food-System Resilience: Predictive Approaches to Production, Distribution and Consumption

Abstract Global food systems are increasingly exposed to climate change, geopolitical instability, resource scarcity, market volatility, supply-chain disruptions, disease outbreaks, and changing consumer demand. These pressures have highlighted the limitations of conventional food-production and distribution systems and created an urgent need for resilient, data-driven approaches. Digital technologies—including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things devices, remote sensing, blockchain, cloud computing, digital twins, predictive analytics, robotics, and mobile platforms—can improve the capacity of food systems to anticipate disruptions, adapt operations, and recover from shocks. This paper examines the role of digital technologies in strengthening resilience across three interconnected dimensions: food production, food distribution, and food consumption. It explores predictive applications in crop and livestock management, weather and yield forecasting, pest and disease detection, precision agriculture, cold-chain monitoring, logistics optimisation, demand forecasting, food-waste reduction, traceability, and consumer behaviour analysis. The paper proposes an integrated Digital Food-System Resilience Framework based on data acquisition, predictive intelligence, adaptive decision-making, supply-chain coordination, and continuous learning. Particular attention is given to the importance of interoperable data, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, farmer accessibility, affordability, digital skills, and responsible use of artificial intelligence. The paper argues that digitalisation should not merely automate existing food-system processes but should enable anticipatory decision-making in which potential disruptions are detected before they become systemic crises. The study concludes that resilient food systems will increasingly depend on the integration of digital technologies across the entire food value chain, from farm-level production to consumer-level demand, while ensuring that technological transformation remains inclusive, sustainable, and accessible.
