Digital Therapeutics and Adaptive Healthcare: Evaluating Technology-Enabled Models of Personalized Patient Care

Abstract Digital therapeutics (DTx) are emerging as an important component of technology-enabled healthcare, providing evidence-based interventions through software to prevent, manage or treat health conditions. Their development coincides with a broader transition from episodic healthcare toward personalised, data-driven and continuously adaptive models of patient care. This paper examines the role of digital therapeutics in adaptive healthcare, focusing on personalised interventions, real-time monitoring, artificial intelligence, behavioural data, remote patient engagement and dynamic treatment adjustment. A conceptual framework is proposed in which patient-generated data, clinical information and digital biomarkers are continuously analysed to tailor therapeutic interventions according to individual needs and changing health conditions. The paper evaluates potential benefits including improved accessibility, continuous monitoring, treatment personalisation, patient engagement and scalable delivery. It also examines important limitations, including evidence quality, clinical validation, interoperability, privacy, cybersecurity, digital exclusion, algorithmic bias, patient adherence and integration with conventional healthcare systems. Particular attention is given to the distinction between digital health applications and clinically validated digital therapeutics, highlighting the importance of evidence-based intervention design and measurable clinical outcomes. The analysis suggests that adaptive digital therapeutics can complement conventional clinical care by providing continuous, personalised and data-informed interventions. However, their successful integration requires rigorous clinical evaluation, transparent algorithms, secure data governance, interoperability and appropriate clinician oversight. Future digital therapeutic systems are likely to combine artificial intelligence, wearable sensing, behavioural analytics and adaptive intervention engines to create increasingly personalised models of patient care.
