Digital Business Models and Sustainable Value Creation in the Global Economy

| Abstract | Digital transformation has fundamentally changed how organizations create, deliver, and capture value in the global economy. The emergence of cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, digital platforms, big-data analytics, Internet of Things technologies, blockchain, and mobile ecosystems has enabled organizations to develop business models that differ substantially from traditional product- and transaction-oriented approaches. At the same time, increasing environmental pressures, social expectations, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder demands have made sustainable value creation a central strategic objective. This study examines the relationship between digital business models and sustainable value creation through a qualitative and comparative analysis of contemporary research. It investigates platform-based models, subscription services, sharing models, servitization, digital ecosystems, data-driven business models, and circular digital models. Particular attention is given to the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability. The analysis indicates that digital technologies can improve resource efficiency, enable dematerialization, expand access to services, support circular-economy practices, and create new opportunities for global market participation. However, digitalization can also generate environmental and social challenges, including energy consumption, electronic waste, digital inequality, data privacy risks, labour displacement, and market concentration. The study argues that digital business models create sustainable value when technological capabilities are aligned with stakeholder interests, resource efficiency, responsible data governance, social inclusion, and long-term economic resilience. The study concludes that sustainable digital business models require organizations to move beyond short-term digital growth toward integrated economic, environmental, and social value creation. |
