Autonomous Systems and Sustainable Mobility: Integrating AI, Robotics and Intelligent Transportation Technologies

Abstract The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, connected vehicles, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and intelligent transportation systems is transforming the concept of sustainable mobility. Autonomous systems have the potential to improve transportation safety, efficiency, accessibility, energy utilisation, and environmental performance while reducing dependence on conventional transportation models. This study examines the integration of AI, robotics, autonomous systems, and intelligent transportation technologies within the broader transition towards sustainable mobility. A qualitative and descriptive research methodology based on secondary literature is adopted to examine technological developments, application areas, opportunities, challenges, and future directions. The study focuses on autonomous vehicles, intelligent traffic management, connected transportation infrastructure, autonomous public transport, robotic mobility systems, and AI-enabled mobility optimisation. The analysis indicates that autonomous systems can contribute to sustainability by improving traffic-flow efficiency, reducing unnecessary vehicle movement, supporting shared mobility, optimising routes, and enabling more efficient public transportation. However, the environmental benefits of autonomy are not automatic and depend on factors such as vehicle utilisation, fleet composition, energy sources, travel demand, infrastructure design, and transportation policies. Significant challenges remain concerning cybersecurity, safety validation, ethical decision-making, regulatory frameworks, public acceptance, employment disruption, data governance, and the rebound effect associated with increased travel demand. The study proposes an integrated sustainable autonomous mobility framework based on AI-enabled vehicles, intelligent infrastructure, renewable energy, shared mobility, real-time data exchange, and human-centred governance. The paper concludes that autonomous mobility can contribute significantly to sustainable transportation when technological innovation is aligned with environmental objectives, efficient public infrastructure, and inclusive mobility policies.
